Rebalancing the Autonomic Nervous system

Injury and pain lead to a state of distress in the body. This may be an acute, short-term, or chronic degenerative phase of "dis-ease".

It results in an over-dominance of the Sympathetic Nervous System (our 'fight/flight response).

Many people that receive Bowen therapy, in addition to the physical discomfort that they experience, also complain of feeling stressed as a result of their condition.

In a session, key balancing 'moves' are performed on either side of the spine, where the Sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia (messengers) are located, these ganglia are directly influenced by the 'move' resulting in dynamic homeostatic reorganisation within the body.

- This is why a lot of people feel an intense feeling of full body relaxation only a few minutes into a session.

By creating a sense of relaxation in the paraspinal tissue, the sympathetic nervous system is calmed, and an overall sense of relaxation and relief is felt throughout the body.

The body is able to heal itself when it is in a more relaxed state, such as at rest or asleep, i.e. under the influence of the parasympathetic nervous system.

In this phase, nutrients and fluid are digested and assimilated and delivery to the tissues, metabolic waste products are removed from the tissue, and the cells are able to repair and regenerate themselves.

This, Bowen is not only able to facilitate healing of injured muscles and tendons, but facilitate the optimal function of internal visceral organs as well.
